Pro Stock racer Michael Malmgren thought the newly-resurfaced track surface was responsible for his problems. "The issue is the breakage that racers have to face. We have ruined a clutch and rear ends and it just costs too much to mess around in conditions that are outside what I think should be tolerable." |
Pro Mod racer Johan Lindberg said "We have a good tuner in my brother Janne. We increased the power yesterday but are not so sure of conditions today. We are confident we can do well." Johan was successful in the sole round of racing that took place beating Terje Hakonsen. |
Pro Stock racer Jan Palmqvist said "I am very satisfied with what we have done this weekend. The first qualifier was bad but the crew had an idea on setup which gave us a 99% chance of making the ladder. We tried something different in the third qualifier but the car didn't buy it so we have gone back to the previous setup." Jan's son Christoffer Petterson who is aged 16 has with the help of some photographers, including our own Roger, to make an excellent booklet called Pro Stock 2010, available at Mantorp only and in Swedish. Christoffer said "Thanks to the teams for information they gave me and the photographers for their work. I plan to make a booklet for 2011 season in Swedish, English and German." |
Pro Stock racer Mats Jacobssen, who is first alternative, said "We have a brand new car to us. We ran an older car last year and decided we needed an up to date one, so I bought Greg Andersen's 2006 Championship-winning Pontiac GTO built by Jerry Bickel. We were no.4 in the first session but had to put our spare engine in yesterday after a rod broke in our new Steve Schmidt engine." Mats said thanks to his sponsors All Tele, Midland Oil, Muscle Cars and HH Engineering. |
Pro Stock racer Jonas 'Lord' Dantanus said "We wanted to use our spare Reher Morrison engine this weekend to tune it for the track. We are taking it very carefully so we are not so quick, but the main objective has been to see that everything is ok and we will be making full power for eliminations." |
Super Twin racer Lo Stauble said "The event has been a little bit difficult and we struggled on our first run. By the last qualifier the setup was ok but the whole field was almost two tenths slower than what they should have been running. It is amazing how close the qualified field are." |
Pro Modified racer Urban Johansson is no.1 qualifier with the '63 Vette running its best time ever, 6.080/376kph. He said "We have struggled with the chassis at the Main Event and at Alastaro. The engine is making more power but we were suffering with traction but the car was going straight. We had a good computer trace on our first pass and took some power off to get down the track and did that right. I hope the same setup will do the job today." |
Pro Modified racer Marko Lantto is first alternate to the quick field. "We had some clutch issues which resulted in shake earlier but no other problems. If we get to race, and there is a chance we will, we need to go quicker than we did on the last run." |
Pro Modified racer Håkan Nilsson is racing at Mantorp Park for the first time since he won Top Fuel here in his 2006 championship year. He said "We decided to come and try althogh we did not set our hopes too high and our objective was to qualify which we have done. I got down the track in the second qualifying session and improved to a 6.403 in the third. We are taking it step by step. the car was built in the US by GPS Race Cars in 2006 and ran one season in South Carolina on an outlaw eighth mile track - we have had to make changes to get it legal for Pro Mod. We run when we like to for fun - this is our first time racing away from Malmö." Håkan is with long-standing team mate Ulf Stadig. |
Pro Modified racer Lars Olsson has also made a return. He raced this Mats Jönsson-owned and Bertans Race Cars-built '89 Firebird in 2005 and 2006 with a nitrous engine and has come back with a blown methanol combination. The car was actually built as a Pro Stock car. Lars said "We are testing the car at Veidec Raceway in Malmö and this is our first quarter mile with the blown setup. We've struggled with the gearbox but have solved that now." Lars qualified 14th with a 6.584. |
Top Fuel Micke Kågered had a firey run yesterday's first session after a couple of rods let go. Team member Rob Inglis (pictured) said "The broken rods resulted in the gaskets being pushed out and the resulting oil leak ignited at 3.1s into the run, which created the fireball. We still ran a 4.66 but the speed was well down. All the wiring was undamaged as the fire had gone behind and burnt the parachutes off. We then put the spare motor in and another set of heads which was a thrash to get ready for the last run. On the final qualifier the blower belt pulley came off after one second which was probably due to a mistake in the rush to get ready. We will now have to see what spare parts we need before the next race." |
Top Fuel Dragster racer Anita Mäkelä sits in the car just before the crew warmed the engine this morning. At the no.1 qualifier ceremony at the start line, Anita said "I have nitro in my blood and I can't stay away from here. I was satisfied with a 4.05 best time but now I want to go quicker today." |
Top Methanol Funny Car racer Rob Turner was pleased to run a 6.30 in qualifying. Crew chief Steve Turner said "We are now thinking about the tune-up and getting the shift points exactly right rather than the change of car. The maintenance on the car is more or less the same as the dragster and the engine is looking like it hasn't been run; that's part of the battle, you can then concentrate on tuning. Rob and Steve are joined by previous owner Jeff Carroll. He said "The team are great and we are being conservative with the tune-up. If we had run the car all the way down we would have gone 5.8-5.9. Rob has had to change his driving style, you need to man-handle funny cars whereas driving a dragster is more about finesse. I'm looking forward to the Euro Finals and are working on my new car in the US, an A/Fuel nostalgia car which will be making its debut at the 2011 March Meet." Jeff asked us to say hi to his business partner in Titan Speed Bob Sanderson. |
Top Methanol Funny Car racer Arvid Grødem worked with his team to 2:30am this morning putting in a new crank after a problem in the third session. "I don't know what came first, the tyre shake or the crank. The team had to completely disassemble the engine and we found a broken rocker and there was also electrical damage. They did a tremendous job and I want to thank Pål-Henning, Tore, Jan Vidar, Gunnar and Bjorn." |
Top Methanol Funny Car racer Dan Larsen ended as no.1 qualifier with a 5.910, the class's only five in qualifying. "It wasn't a great time but at least we found a way down the track. The points are not so important for us this season as we had to restart in Finland after the big damage we had at the Main Event. I think we can do better today," he said at the startline ceremony. |
Pro Stock racer Jimmy Ålund said at the no.1 qualifiers' ceremony, "We went to the USA to learn something. One thing we learnt was it is that there is a long distance to travel between tracks! You have to race the racetrack and here, we did the best and I am proud of the 329kph new track record. We have a good combination with our Bob Ingles engine and Jerry Haas chassis. We will be running the rest of the FIA season but don't realistically have any chance of a championship." |
Super Twin racer Per Bengtsson qualified no.1 and said "We are wanting to set new European records rather than win another championship. However our quickest qualifying time of 4.46 is not what we expected and some way off the record of 4.29. However the track is improving all the time and we want to win our home race." |
.Pro Stock bike racer Anders Abrahamsson said at the no.1 qualifiers' ceremony, "My guys are doing a tremendous job of maintaining the bike. With Ulf and Kenneth not qualified, I have the chance to make up the gap in championship points. And I am really pleased with the new track record of 7.24." |
