Track crew checking as I type. Lex got past the half track bogeyman with a nice clean pass all the way, up the ladder and a very happy crew. That pairing put Championship #2 Risto out of the ladder for tomorrow, so we'll have to see what happens next. Clean-up complete in the shutdown area, one of the two current non-qualifiers was up for his own shot at getting back in the ladder. Jari will be spectating tomorrow as his tyres went up in smoke about 400 feet out. Same story for Timo, cylinder out from the line and then up in smoke about half track, and he put the chute out for good measure. Urs had to shut off after a chute deployed in the burnout. Urs says that the new NHRA-mandated safety system on the car popped the chute and shut the motor off. Last chance saloon for Risto both for this event and his Championship hopes and he delivered, even with a cylinder out and an early shut-off. Anita now out of tomorrow's eliminations, what could she do about that? Similarly to Risto Anita had cylinders out and shut off early but still made it into tomorrow's ladder albeit on bump spot. Great run from Stig in the other lane, clean pass and into #1 spot. Only one racer left to spoil Anita's day now, Janne needing to find a couple of hundredths. And find them he did! A clean straight pass putting Anita on the trailer for the weekend. Andy's tyres went up in smoke about 200 feet out and he shut off. Final qualifying:
16:35 FIA Top Methanol Dragster final qualifying session (left lane first): Esko Raisvuo 6.361/391.95 bye; Paul Ingar Udtian no time, Dennis Habermann 5.562/413.59; Fred Hanssen 5.495/415.17, Derek Flynn 7.581/176.62; Krister Johansson 10.500/123.71, Dave Wilson 5.495/429.03; Peter Schöfer 5.433/424.83 bye Cylinders out all the way for Esko and he is spectating tomorrow as is Rob Turner whose blower lifted on the last pass and caused all sorts of problems. Paul Ingar rolled through stage, Dennis took the bye and was looking to move up the ladder so as not to face Timo in tomorrow's first round, but no luck on that front and as things stand the brothers will be racing in competition for the third time in three races. Fred's tyres didn't light in the burnout. Great pass for Fred, straight down the middle of his lane and into the 5.4s, no change in position though. Derek was on a stormer but there was a thudding sound at about half track and the Gold RV dragster decelerated very rapidly. Krister's tyres up in smoke about 200 feet out and he shut off, Grumpy pedalled about 500 feet out and it was a very visible pedal, the whole rear wing assembly seemed to twist to the left for a moment. 16:15 FIA Top Methanol Funny Car final qualifying session (left lane first): Danny Bellio 5.906/393.30 bye; Jürgen Nagel 6.172/362.64 bye; Jarmo Kuutniemi 5.797/367.42 bye; Ulf Leanders 11.165/106.81, Leif Andréasson 5.868/391.25 Danny's back! A much better pass, no shake and straight as an arrow, up to #5 spot. Improvement for Jürgen too, the car getting a bit of a bounce on in the last couple of hundred feet but Jürgen stayed with it. No change in position though. Great run for Jarmo, a new PB, would have been quicker but the blower burst plate let go and the relief panel came off the bonnet and disappeared into the circuit infield. But congratulations to Jappa on the PB and the #1 spot at that point. So could Ulf or Leif do anything about it? Ulf hit shake and shut off as the car went to cross lanes. Jürgen and Ingo racing for first alternate in this evening's first round of eliminations as Rolf Ammann is obviously out for the weekend. Just to make sure of it Ingo leapfrogged Jürgen who got very close to the left guardrail, got it back into the groove but then shut off early. Surprised to see Henri as we had been told that he was out for the weekend, a great pass though and made up one spot. Nice pass for Robert, no improvement but a solid performance and safely in the ladder. A brief pedal for Norbert, but it sounded more as if his foot was pushed off the throttle than a deliberate pedal, either way an improvement and up the ladder. Graham shut off before staging for a fluid leak, Roger took the bye, a nice straight pass and improvement although staying in place. Looked like flames from the exhausts in the second half but probably hear haze as it is very hot out there. Good to see Marc back after the earlier problems, the left side of the car taped up around the headers and indeed new headers. The tape started shedding from the car by the Tree but the front stayed together and a very consistent run with Marc's previous weekend best. Good-looking run for Tomi but no improvement. The other victim of this morning's accident in the next pair, the twins' Camaro looking no worse for it. A great match with between Urban and Micke L, Urban getting the jump and Micke going easily 200 feet with the front left wheel in the air and finding their form just at the right moment. Former #1 qualifier and Eurodragster.com sponsor Andy next up against Bruno. Great run for Gus, front wheel up for a couple of hundred feet and into #2 spot, Bruno's motor sounded just for a moment as if it was labouring but the run was no slouch, slight improvement in ET but no change in position. A bit of a lucky break for Harald as he is still in the pits fixing a burnt piston. Blackstriping for Kenneth in the first 100 feet or so but consistent with his best pass so far. No improvements for Jan or Micke but safely in the ladder. Nice paired burnouts by Richard and Magnus, big cheers from the crowd. Super Street Bike is running a 32-bike field, bump spot 9.530, and the first round of eliminations will take place later on today. Rich Stubbins up into #1 spot but not for long as Graham Balchin took it back with what we think is a Personal Best, well done Graham! Pete Bellenie back into the sevens with a 7.985, well done Pete and by the way is it dry enough for you? New Personal Best for Thomas Granica, 7.871/302.08, nice one Thomas! Roger Goring finished the "morning" session with a 6.383/397.40 checkout pass in the Firestorm Jet FC. On Roger's first go yesterday a solenoid failed which caused the fuel straight back to the return so the jet got none of it. Got plenty of fuel this time though! Nice one Roger. Great first eighths for both but then Micke's tyres went up in smoke and it looked like the motor was smoking too, the car moved to the right and Micke got very close to the eighth mile reflectors. Lex's tyres also started to smoke at the eighth but judging by his engine note Lex stayed with it. Stig and Risto now current non-qualifiers and as luck would have it they were next up. Risto had a cylinder out all the way down the track but stayed on it past the eighth, Stig was on a real stormer but shut off right on 1000 feet and had the chute out before the stripe. Janne and Micke now the non-qualifiers and Janne next up. Janne's motor sounded irregular when he went to stage but the run was quite OK, very clean and up into #5 spot. I think maybe a PYB for Janne, if so then well done Janne! Urs looked to be on a good one to start with but from here the car showed signs of a broken blower belt at the eighth and Urs put the chutes out. 0.881 to sixty feet for Andy but then the tyres went up in smoke and he got off the throttle and put the chutes out. Eurodragster.com sponsor Derek looked to be on a good run to begin with but a cylinder went out about 330 feet out. Good baseline for Rob but on the bump with Fred and Esko yet to run in this session. Grumpy drove through shake past the Tree and then his tyres smoked, looked like Grumpy pedalled but then a cylinder went out on each side. Clean-looking run for Krister but no improvement. Looked like a banker run for Fred, safely into the ladder at #5 bumping Rob out with one session left to play. Esko's car looked a little lazy off the line and didn't really pick up. Dennis v Timo for the third time in three events although not competitively this time. Nice pairing for the brothers, 0.007 RT for Dennis, visibly ahead but his blower burst panel blew at about 1000 feet. One of Dennis' chutes was flapping about after it deployed, probably quite a lively ride down the shutdown area for Dennis. Peter drove through shake, first time I have seen Peter's tyres visibly shaking since the chassis mods, but he stayed with it. Consistent run for Paul. For the second time this year the quickest Top Methanol Dragster bump spot record falls. Qualifying after this session:
12:40 FIA Top Methanol Funny Car qualifying session 3 (left lane first): Jürgen Nagel 6.343/358.16 bye; Leif Andréasson 5.895/386.24, Danny Bellio 15.665/88.62; Ulf Leanders 5.819/396.60 bye; Jarmo Kuutniemi no time, Dan Larsen 5.885/375.88 Solid launch for Jürgen and one of those runs which looked quicker than the ET which came up, good for one place on the ladder. Leif on a spare transmission made up of "Lots of old bits". Nice run for Leif and into #2 spot, Danny in the other lane hit shake at sixty feet and the car turned hard left and crossed lanes. Danny got off the throttle and wrenched it back into his lane. Big burnout for Eurodragster.com sponsor Ulf then a very nice run, no sign of shake, the car moving left and right a bit but Ulf had it covered and into #1 spot. Jarmo rolled through stage so no time, he hit the throttle when Dan's lights ran - looked like a good run although he got close to the eighth mile reflectors. 12:30 During the clean-up of Rolf Vogel's oil we were introduced to some VIPs visiting from the USA: Melanie Troxel and Tommy Johnson Jr, Frank Hawley and Roger Burgess. Interviewed by Benni on the PA they were all very complimentary about the facility and the racing. Frank Hawley said that the group were here to talk about a worldwide tour. There was a trail of fluid in Rolf's lane. Jürgen first up after the clean-up, heading for the centre line and moving about its lane but Jürgen wasn't getting off the pedal for anything. First time on the board and into the ladder albeit on the bump. Big burnout again from Graham. Marcus' 'Vette seemed to hesitate briefly and he was shut off by half track. Graham's run looked quicker than the time on the board, straight to start with but a twitch in the second half, Graham had it covered and moved up the ladder. Nice run for Eurodragster.com sponsor Marco, very straight and getting back to his Mantorp form. Ingo's Avenger looked to be labouring a little and was drifting towards the centre line but he still made up a place. What happened next was one of the most bizzarre things I have seen in thirty two years going racing - must be the world's first ever three-car Pro Mod crash. Johnny Jorgensen was backing up from his burnout and just never stopped, reversing into Micke Lindahl's Camaro which was then pushed back into Marc Meihuizen's car. Johnny's car was pretty well wedged in to Micke's Camaro as the tow rope broke as they tried to pull the cars apart. Pro Mods disentangled Robert and Roger faced off. Roger's Mustang was moving left and right but he stayed with it, another PB for Robert. Both improved but both stayed in place. Tremendous pass for Eurodragster.com sponsor Andy, front up, then down, then up again. Tomi blackstriped his lane and then shut off at about half track. Bruno's tyres didn't light on the burnout, would it harm in these hot conditions? No sign of tyre spin, looked like Bruno shut off a touch early. Straight run for Urban and accelerating very hard towards the top end. A big cloud of smoke from the left bank of headers when Micke G started his burnout. Micke drove through a small amount of shake, improved his ET and made up one place on the ladder. Top speed of the weekend for Mats. re-run for Norbert having been shut off before staging when Johnny Jorgensen reversed into Micke L. Big tyre shake and motor zinging on the launch, a pedal and more shake and Norbert shut off as the Avenger started moving about its lane. Qualifying after this session:
11:10 FIA Pro Stock qualifying session 3 (left lane first): Jonas Engdahl 7.144/312.60 bye; Harald Sturhan 7.139/319.36, Jan Palmqvist 6.865/327.25; Micke Callin 6.943/322.68, Kenneth Söderström no time; Magnus Hansson 6.849/323.88, Richard Sundblom 6.838/329.33; Michael Malmgren 6.809/327.10, Jimmy Ålund 6.784/330.53 Big improvement for Jonas with a new motor in the car, bumping local boy Harry out of the ladder. What could Harry do? Get himself back in by going five thousandths quicker was the answer. In the other lane a great run from Jan moved him up the ladder. Big paired burnouts by Micke C and Kenneth brought the crowd to its feet. Micke C drove the car to the finish line this time, into the sixes and up the ladder, Kenneth's car never went up on the revs and he idled down the track. An improvement for Magnus moved him a couple of places up the ladder, Richard's car headed for the centre line but he stayed with it and pulled it straight, no improvement in ET though. Slight improvement for Michael moved him back up one spot, consistent run for Jimmy. Qualifying after this session:
11:00 Pro Bike qualifying after session 3:
Len Paget back into #1 spot in the second pair of the session. An improvement for Szabolcs Borsay but he stayed in place. Stavros Svrachnos improved and moved up a place in the last pair of the session. Christoph Dubois into #5 spot in the second pair of the session, alongside Marina Andersson who took the Eurodragster.com/Gold RV Perfect ET Award yesterday and looked to be trying for the Eurodragster.com/Speedflow Perfect Light Award today but tried too hard with a small red light. Marc Henney into the top five at #3 towards the end of the session. Next pair and Andre Müller came into the top five at #3. Peter Ellguth moved in to the top five at #4 in the last pair of the session. 10:10 Super Gas qualifying top five after session 3:
Sascha Pretzsch into #2 in the second pair of the session. A few problems with a sticking stage beam and then Annette Müller went into #2 spot. Next pair and Guido Uhlir came into the top five at #4. 9:45 European Top Gas Serie qualifying top five after session 3:
An improvement by Anna-Lena Asplund moved her up to #4. 9:30 Super Street Bike qualifying top five after session 3:
Dave Smith back into the top five at #5 in the sixth pair of the session. Another seven for Thomas Granica, 7.96, well done Thomas! Mark Watkins with top speed of the weekend so far, 313.82 kmh / 195.00 mph, which is going some, well done Mark! 9:15 Public Race qualifying top five after session 3:
Jens Dahms improved in the third pairing but stayed in second at that point. Stephane Blanchet into #2 but a lot of smoke from the car towards the top end. Track checked and all OK so maybe just a tyre rubbing. Next pair and Thomas Helmbrecht moved into the top five at #5. 9:05 Junior Dragster qualifying top five after session 3:
Simon Andersson into #5 in the fifth pair of the session.
