Today's pictures have now been posted; you can view them via the Event Index page. Simon has also just posted another tranche of pit notes which you can also view via the Event Index page.

17:55

We had all three FIM/UEM bike classes in the pairing lanes ready to go but we have a strict curfew of 18:00 here today so the decision was made not to start a session which may not be finished. So that's the end of qualifying for today; stay tuned for today's pictures.

17:50

FIA Top Fuel Dragster qualifying session 1 (left lane first): Siw Nystad did not start, Stig Neergaard 5.1970/393.48 bye, Tommi Haapanen 4.9248/434.12, Janne Ahonen 5.2549/409.80, Jöran Persåker did not start, Micke Kågered 4.8331/467.16 bye, Thomas Nataas 4.9753/472.81 bye, Andy Carter no time, Urs Erbacher 4.8081/505.44, Lex Joon 5.3220/327.75

Siw was pushed out of the line-up at the start of the session, no word on what the problem was. Stig took the bye and it was a stormer, blowing his personal best out of sight, well done Stig! 0.9209 to sixty feet, 3.4538/373.80 at half track, some flames out of the left bank towards the top end. Janne got a big jump on Tommi 0.1850 to 0.4521, 0.8740 to sixty feet for Tommi to Janne's 0.9371 and Tommi had a big advantage at half track 3.2859/391.25 to 3.5201/368.98. Tommi's first four and his personal best ET blown into next week, well done Tommi! Jöran was pushed out of the line-up, similarly to Siw no word on the problem. A nice pass for Micke, 0.8931 to sixty feet and 3.2551/406.62 although there was a left-bank cylinder out most of the way and there were orange flames from the right bank towards the finish line, but this is right on Micke's personal best ET and he went into #1 spot at that point. Andy's tyres didn't light on the burnout and then there was a bang, burst panel I am guessing because the engine stayed lit and Andy drove the Lucas Oil car down the track. Thomas took the bye, 0.8968 to sixty feet, 3.3488/391.61 to half track, smoke from the right bank in the second half but still a big speed (293 mph). A tremendous match-up to begin with between Urs and Lex, 0.8600 to sixty feet for Lex to Urs' 0.8770, 3.2728/411.97 to half track for Urs to Lex's 3.3600/373.35, Lex had a cylinder out and his tyres were hazing, the MPM Oil dragster started to move to the right and got very close to the guardrail. Lex pedalled to pull it straight then the blower belt departed the car. Urs went straight and true, a clean run, blasted the track speed record and did the first half of a European speed record of 505.44 or 314.07 mph, well done Urs! The Reality TV crew with Urs certainly got a good show and they had the pleasure of telling him about his record when he got back to the pit.

Qualifying standings after this session:

  1. Urs Erbacher 4.8081/505.44
  2. Micke Kågered 4.8331/467.16
  3. Tommi Haapanen 4.9248/434.12
  4. Thomas Nataas 4.9753/472.81
  5. Stig Neergaard 5.1970/393.48
  6. Janne Ahonen 5.2549/409.80
  7. Lex Joon 5.3220/327.75

17:20

FIA NDRS Bilsport Pro Modified qualifying session 1 (left lane first): Bert Ove Olofsson 7.0449/314.73, Terje Hakonsen 6.8191/336.71, Micke Nord 7.3329/248.99, Patrick Wikström 6.7012/331.94, Kaj-Erik Nieminen 8.6302/279.35, Norbert Kuno 10.1160/191.04, Robert Koper 13.7843/133.10, Kristian Nyström 6.6992/302.91, Hans Knuters 6.7126/268.61, Tami Brander 6.8978/294.94, Seppo Saapola 6.3021/363.99, Micke Lindahl 6.2668/367.72, Roger Johansson 7.6960/297.90, Marc Meihuizen 6.3989/353.15, Robert Joosten 6.4742/349.75, Micke Gullqvist 6.9851/233.50, Marko Lantto 10.2071/134.09, Bruno Bader 6.5461/342.83, Gordon Appleton 6.4241/351.41, Mats Eriksson 6.8911/343.07, Urban Johansson 8.6452/176.13, Andy Robinson 6.2501/363.84

A good baseline for Terje, Bert Ove's Impala moved around the lane some and judging by the incrementals he shut off just after half track. Good to see Patrick finally back in competition, a big burnout to announce the OFAB Thriller's arrival after a delay getting started. Micke N shut off before his burnout and then seemed to have trouble getting going again, an abbreviated burnout so as not to keep Patrick waiting. On the green Patrick shot away whilst Micke sat on the line, 1.1040 to sixty feet for Patrick and 4.3612/266.95 at half track and a bang at the top end after he shut off, maybe a burst panel. Micke's Mustang was making serious moves around its lane and he stayed with it a very long time - chicken feed after his experiences the other week. Kaj is a new name on me, a very nice-looking 'Vette, the burnout was very slight and turned into shake, then Kaj hit shake on the run but pedalled and stayed with it all the way. Norbert hit shake and pedalled a number of times but then got off the throttle. Robert jumped the lights then hit shake and was off the throttle almost immediately, Kristian laid down a good pass, 0.9891 to sixty feet, 4.2882/265.28 to half track and then there was a cloud of smoke on the finish line and the safety crews chased the car down. Kristian is quite OK but the engine has been damaged.

Hans and Tami first up after the clean-up, my first look at Hans' Willys and it is a fine piece of work. Tami pulled a 150-foot burnout. A tremendous match-up, both racers driving through the tiniest amount of shake, Hans shut off early and had the chutes out right on the line, Tami went for the full pass with a few puffs of smoke from the car but his crew were very pleased with the ET. We were interested to see what Micke L would do after he clocked Europe's quickest eighth-mile pass on Saturday, and it was a stormer for Micke, 1.0378 to sixty feet and 4.1039/290.83 at the eighth. A tremendous pass for Seppo also, blasting his personal best into next week, well done Seppo! But there was a huge cloud of smoke from Seppo's car right on the finish line and the safety crews rushed into action again.

Clean-up done Roger and Marc were up next. A great 150-foot burnout from Roger and he backed up very quickly indeed, back before Marc even though Marc burned out first. Roger's Mustang left the line like a scalded cat, but stayed up on three wheels and headed for the guardrail, Roger pedalled and got back on the throttle then shut off in the second half. 1.0288 to sixty feet for Marc and 4.1618/283.12 at the eighth. Robert J and Micke's match-up looked a lot quicker than it was, the cars side-by-side most of the way but then Micke backed off in the second half after clocking 4.1412/281.73 at half track to Robert's 4.1883/283.70. Marko hit bad shake and the Vette fishtailed and he got off the throttle by 300 feet, in the other lane Bruno put down a strong baseline pass. Mats was next for the demon shake and he did a good job of driving through it but lost a lot of time, Gordon's Camaro moved about its lane some but he stayed with it all the way to the stripe. The numbers one and two in the Championship then paired up, Andy took #1 spot with a tremendous straight pass and a new track ET record whilst Urban hit shake and the Vette turned left and right before he got off the throttle.

FIA Pro Stock qualifying session 1 (left lane first): Peter Dahlin 7.2351/305.72 bye, Micke Callin 6.9840/317.84, Jonas Dantanus 8.8391/190.52, Peter Emilsson 7.0219/310.81, Tommy Leindahl 6.9840/316.50, Jan Palmqvist 7.1581/301.77, Richard Sundblom 7.7450/267.03, Kenneth Soderström 6.9999/316.48, Magnus Hansson 7.1999/265.34, Adam Flamholc 7.1931/313.30, Eero Knihtilä 10.0210/154.13, Jimmy Ålund 6.9253/320.34, Michael Malmgren 6.8420/323.24

A nice straight pass for Peter, 1.0850 to sixty feet and 4.6670/243.20 at the eighth. A great pass for Micke C, a new personal best, well done Micke! 0.0849 reaction, 1.0402 to sixty feet, 4.4932/253.26 at the eighth. Jonas' Camaro hesitated off the line and he backed off before half track. Great to see Tommy make it back after his woes of a few weeks ago and this stormer will have put him firmly back on the horse, 1.0202 to sixty feet, 4.4790/251.37 at half track and an identical ET to Micke C. Peter sat on the line for an age, 1.8160 reaction time but a good pass after that, 1.0390 to sixty feet and 4.5030/251.58 at the eighth. Jan went forward to stage with his driver side door open as his crew gestured to one another. A good straight pass though and his crew were very happy with it, 1.0299 to sixty feet and 4.5642/245.55 at the eighth. Richard had huge wheelspin off the line, 1.3650 to sixty feet and he was backing out of it by half track which he gt to at 5.0098/243.97. A very good-looking pass for Kenneth, 1.0279 to sixty feet and 4.4919/316.48 at the eighth; Magnus pulled a meteoric 1.0050 sixty foot time, 4.4860/244.65 at the eighth and backed off long before the stripe. Adam was away first and stayed with it even though the tyres were spinning, Eero pedalled off the line and then shut off long before half track.

Jimmy and Michael were shut off for rain as they returned from their burnouts; the initial session took place under threatening skies and so it was, unfortunately, going to happen eventually.

Jimmy and Michael were of course first up after the track was dried. A tremendous match-up, Jimmy was awat first 0.0559 to 0.1779 but then it was all about Michael, 1.0051 to sixty feet, 4.3970/257.04 to the eighth and a new track record, well done Michael!

Qualifying standings after this session:

  1. Michael Malmgren 6.8420/323.24
  2. Jimmy Ålund 6.9253/320.34

FIA Top Methanol Funny Car qualifying session 1 (left lane first): Danny Bellio 6.1539/369.88 bye, Jonas Staflund 6.3017/346.79, Leif Andréasson 5.8313/378.92, Jarmo Kuutniemi 7.2290/287.50, Kjell Sjöblom 7.0038/307.29, Ulf Leanders 6.2138/381.44, Dan Larsen 5.8473/388.96, Arvid Grødem 6.3391/326.21, Freddy Fagerström 6.9629/363.94

A nice baseline pass for Danny, 0.9930 to sixty feet and 4.0451/295.49 to half track, the car bouncing a little as it got to the start of the hill. Great to see Jonas back in FIA competition, a nice burnout but trumped by Leif who smoked them to 100 feet. Jonas pulled a daylight holeshot on Leif, 0.2571 to 0.6668 but Leif had made up a tenth by sixty feet, 0.9572 to Jonas' 1.0579, it looked as if fluid was coming out of Jonas' car at about half track, Leif got a serious bounce on as he got to the hill but stayed with it and got there first by 0.0607 whilst Jonas' FC started to smoke and got close to the guardrail at the top end. Shake and pedal central for the match-up between Jarmo and Kjell, Jarmo's FC made some serious left and right moves and then puffed smoke at about 1000 feet, Kjell shut off long before the finish line. Long burnouts for both Ulf and Dan, Ulf hit shake and had to pedal as the IronCad FC started to make a serious move around the lane, a much straighter run for Dan. Freddy was away long before Arvid 0.1739 to 0.4049 but then pedalled several times for shake, 4.6919/254.36 at the eighth to Arvid's 4.1249/298.10. Arvid's car sounded to be labouring all the way down the track and he got very close to the edge of his lane at the top end.

Qualifying standings after this session:

  1. Leif Andréasson 5.8313/378.92
  2. Dan Larsen 5.8473/388.96

FIA Top Methanol Dragster qualifying session 1 (left lane first): Derek Flynn 6.3818/343.32, Arto Hoyla 6.0641/371.38, Timo Habermann 5.8271/385.01, Paul Ingar Udtian 5.7757/390.02, Krister Johansson 5.8170/402.94, Peter Schöfer 5.8771/404.76, Rob Turner 5.6860/383.48, Dave Wilson 5.4870/413.38

Derek's first outing with his new Hemi. Neither Derek nor Arto's tyres lit on the burnout. Derek drove through shake but still clocked 0.9927 at sixty feet and blew away his personal best, well done Derek! A good baseline pass for Arto, 0.9780 to sixty feet and 3.9350/295.44 at half track. Nice burnouts for Timo and Paul, a great 0.0539 reaction for Timo, 1.0020 to sixty feet and 3.8000/316.06 at half track, a new PB and into number two spot at that point. A great-looking run for Paul, left for dead at the Tree but 0.9559 to sixty feet and 3.7851/315.81 at half track, a new PB and into #1 spot at that point. Both teams were very happy with that one and rightly so. A solid pair of runs for Krister and Peter, Krister under power all the way to the end with no sign of dead pipes, 1.0618 to sixty feet and 3.9062/402.94 at the eighth, Peter drove through what looked like pretty bad shake but a red-hot 0.9473 to sixty feet and 3.9092/315.14 to half track. A great match-up between Rob and Grumpy, Rob visibly away first 0.1338 to 0.2210 and an even quicker sixty foot time that Peter's, 0.9383 and 3.6582/316.06 at half track. Grumpy trumped Rob at sixty feet, 0.9299 and 3.5948/336.94 at the eighth.

Derek's time was removed from the standings after the post-run tech check.

Qualifying standings after this session:

  1. Dave Wilson 5.4870/413.38
  2. Rob Turner 5.6860/383.48
  3. Paul Ingar Udtian 5.7757/390.02
  4. Krister Johansson 5.8170/402.94
  5. Timo Habermann 5.8271/385.01
  6. Peter Schöfer 5.8771/404.76
  7. Arto Hoyla 6.0641/371.38

13:15

It's now a lovely day here and we will shortly be starting with FIA Top Methanol Dragster. Stay tuned.

11:45

Word from race officials is that when we start we will go straight into the first Pro session.

11:20

The light rain got very heavy before it eventually stopped. The track crew are now out working hard again and as is the way at drag strips all over the world an equal number of people are standing watching them. The track looks to be drying very quickly, it is not at all cold out there but there is not much of a breeze to help things along.

People who know better than I do say that the rain and cloud is out of here very soon and then it's good weather all the way through. I'll stick to the face/window method but here's hoping that they are right.

Stay tuned and we'll give you another update before lunchtime, you can of course keep an eye on the webcam to see how we are progressing.

9:20

Track drying is going very well here at Mantorp Park. For the first time ever at this track there are two jet dryers at work on the surface as an extra dryer has been brought in from Denmark. From my seat in Race Control the racing surface looks dry, I am guessing that it is the shutdown area which needs the most work.

This really ought to go on the pit notes but Simon is out in the pits at present and we've not got a lot else to put in this report right now. Track announcer Christer Abrahamson is giving a run out to a new piece of Top Fuel Dragster theme music this weekend. If you want to give it a try yourself then the piece is called Planet Hell by Nightwish, from their album Once. It can certainly be downloaded from MSN Music and doubtless other sites. Give it a spin and see what you think. If the piece is well-received then we will be pleased to announce that it was your reporter's idea, if not then we'll blame Christer for not saying "No".

Stay tuned and we'll bring you another update soon...and just as we went to post this update it started to rain again, but only lightly.

7:25

Good morning and welcome from Mantorp Park. It's day two of NDRS qualifying and day one of Pro qualifying for the Veidec Festival and we're here to bring you all the news in association with American Car Imports.

The Webster Race Engineering/MPM Oil webcam is on-line and is broadcasting a picture every two minutes.

Those of you personally acquainted with your reporter will know that I prefer not to look at or listen to weather forecasts in the week leading up to a race, and that almost everyone respects that wish. I quite often say "I'll stick my face out of the window in the morning and if it gets wet then it's raining". Well, this morning I stuck my face out of the window and it got wet. It rained overnight but the rain actually stopped maybe half an hour ago and the track crew are already out working on the surface. The sky is quite bright to the south and east so we were pretty obviously only on the edge of this particular batch.

We are scheduled to start at 8:30 with Junior Dragster, of course we will let you know as soon as things start moving and Simon and Kirstie will be hitting the pits for more news from racers.

On that subject we have had a lot of very complimentary E-Mails about the new format of the pit notes, which include pictures. This was all Simon's idea and it has worked out beautifully so a big pat on the back to him and a big Thank You to everyone who has written.

We must say a big Hello to Björn Sundkvist who is tuned in from the West Coast of the USA where he is on business. Hope you are having a good time Björn and I hope you are enjoying the coverage.

OK, we're off to get some breakfast and then we will come back and give you another update.
